What a DC Universe logo variant is
From late 1992 through the end of 1996, DC sold comics outside of comic shops in shrink-wrapped multi-packs. Toys R Us had 20-packs. Walmart, Costco, Sam's Club, Kmart, and other big retailers carried 2-packs, 4-packs, and boxed collector sets. The books inside those packs were mostly reprints, and on most of them the barcode box on the front cover has no barcode. It has the DC Universe logo instead.
That is the whole variant. Same story, same cover art, same paper. The only difference is what sits inside the UPC box. Collectors call them DC Universe logo variants, DCU variants, or DC Universe UPC variants. You will also see them sold as "Walmart variants" on eBay. Walmart was one of several retailers, not the only one.
Why a logo instead of a barcode? DC never published an explanation. The common theory is that the pack carried the barcode the register needed, so the books inside did not need one, and DC filled the empty box with the logo. Treat that as a theory, not a fact.
The earliest known pack is dated 12/92 and the last known is dated 12/96. Most of the books on this list carry 1993 to 1996 cover dates.
Why they are rare and why people collect them
Nobody knows the print runs
DC has never released numbers, and there is no distributor data for pack contents. Every rarity call on this page comes from 10 plus years of collectors comparing notes on what turns up and what does not.
Packs were built by month
A Toys R Us 20-pack from a given month had the same books in it. Some issues only ever showed up in one pack. Action Comics 686 (2nd print) is believed to have been exclusive to a single 2-pack, which is why it is the rarest book on the list.
They got treated like junk
For 20 years these were reprints, and reprints went in the quarter bin. Add that they sold shrink-wrapped in stacks of 20 with the bottom books crushed, and high grade copies are hard to find.
Later is harder
Books from 1993 turn up more often than books from 1994 to 1996. The later the cover date, the longer the hunt.
Not every pack has them
Plenty of packs held regular direct or newsstand copies. The 12/93 pack, for example, contains a Man of Steel 18 2nd print, not the logo variant. A sealed pack is not a guarantee.
Some are real keys
Flash 92 (first Impulse), Superboy 9 (first King Shark), Man of Steel 18 (first full Doomsday, 5th print), Green Lantern 50 (first full Kyle Rayner as Green Lantern), Wonder Woman 90 (first Artemis), Steel 1 (first Natasha Irons), Batman and Robin Adventures 1 (Harley Quinn cover), and the Animaniacs Christmas Special (first appearance of the show characters in comics) all have logo copies, and the logo copy is the scarcest version of each. About 70 issues on the list are keys for one reason or another. Each one carries a green Key tag in the checklist with the reason, pulled from Key Collector Comics, and you can filter the list down to keys only.
How to identify one
- Check the UPC box. Bottom left of the front cover. The DC Universe logo must be inside the box where the barcode would be.
- Prestige books, check the back. Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey 1 to 3 have the box on the back cover.
- Two logo versions exist for some issues. Collector's Edition and standard cover (Batman 515, Detective 682, Flash 100, Superman 100), glow and non-glow (Batman 531), stickered and non-stickered (Superman 104, Man of Steel 42, Detective 690), embossed and non-embossed (Superman: The Wedding Album). The checklist lists each one separately.
- Reprints count when the logo is there. Action 684 3rd print, Action 686 2nd print, Superman 74 4th print, Superman 77 3rd print, Man of Steel 18 5th print, Man of Steel 19 3rd print, Man of Steel 20 2nd print, Adventures of Superman 498 4th print, Adventures of Superman 499 3rd print, Justice League America 69 4th print, and Green Lantern 51 2nd print are all later printings with the logo in the box. The printing is in the indicia.
- Do not confuse them with two cousins. A short run of books from around the end of 1993 (Batman 502, Detective 669, Superman 84, and a few others) has a plain DC bullet in the UPC box instead of the DC Universe logo. The Zero Hour #0 issues from 1994 put a Zero Hour symbol in the box. Both are listed in the related section below. They are their own thing.
- Superman 116 logo copies do not have the Teen Titans banner or the interior preview that the direct edition has.
- Superman: The Wedding Album 1 exists two ways: the non-embossed cover came in the wedding 2-pack, the embossed cover came in the 20-pack. The Superman collector's set has the embossed one.
What they are worth
Value works the way it does for any comic: demand, condition, and how many copies exist. The rarity tiers on this page come from the collector community (the CBSI guide and the CGC boards thread) and read Common, Rare, Super Rare, and Possibly Rare. "Common" means common for a logo variant. Every book here is scarcer than its first print.
The books that sell for real money are the Super Rare tier: Action 686 2nd print, Man of Steel 18 5th print, Man of Steel 19 3rd print, Flash 100 standard cover, Flash 116, Green Lantern 51 2nd print, Superman 77 3rd print, Superman 97, Superman 113, Robin 12, Robin 30, Azrael 22, and Superboy Annual 3. Below that, the Rare tier is where most of the trading happens.

Are DC Universe logo variants worth anything?
The Super Rare tier sells for real money, and the Rare tier trades regularly above first-print prices. Common ones are cheap to buy and still scarcer than the newsstand or direct copy. Condition matters as much as it does for any 90s book, and high grade logo copies are hard to find.

CGC has labeled these as "DC Universe logo" or "DC Universe UPC" variants. Check the label notes on any slab you are buying and confirm the logo is inside the UPC box in the photo.
