Print runs were huge
X-Men #1 from 1991 sold more than 8 million copies. When that many copies exist, most of them are worth a few dollars at most, even in nice shape.
Gimmick covers were common
Foil, hologram, die-cut, and polybagged covers were printed to be collectible, so plenty of copies were saved. They rarely sell for much today.
Some 90s books did hold up
First appearances of characters who later became popular are the exception. Books like these can still be worth real money, especially in high grade.
Newsstand copies matter
Many 1990s newsstand copies, the ones with a UPC barcode on the cover, were printed in smaller numbers than direct edition copies. Collectors often pay more for them.
