You can learn a lot about a box of comics at the kitchen table. Here is what we look at first.
The cover price
Look in the top corner of the cover. Most books priced at 10 or 12 cents date to 1969 or earlier, and those are the ones that deserve a closer look. Books priced at a dollar or more are usually from the late 1980s on.
The issue number
Low numbers matter. A #1, or an early issue of a long running series, is more likely to be valuable than issue #247 of the same title.
The barcode box
On books from the 1980s through the 2000s, a UPC barcode usually means a newsstand copy. Those were printed in smaller numbers than direct edition copies, and collectors often pay more for them.
The condition
Tears, missing pieces, water stains, and loose covers lower value. Sharp corners, flat spines, and bright covers raise it. Do not try to clean or repair anything before we see it.
